El Mastaba Center for Popular Egyptian Music is proud to announce the opening of a new space, El Tanboura Hall for the performance and presentation of diverse popular music traditions. The establishment of this space builds on El Mastaba’s success in founding and nurturing a number of traditional music groups, among them El Tanbura, El Rango, Al Waziri, Maddahin Port Sa’id, Al Hinna, a children’s group (these from the Canal Zone), The Bedouin Jerrycan Band (Sinai), , Darawish Abul Ghait (Cairo El Baramka (Delta), Kaff al Ja’afra and Mazamir il Lail (both from Upper Egypt), Adwa’ el Nuba (Nubian).
The El Mastaba will launch its program with weekly live performances every Thursday and Friday nights. Thursdays, El Rango performs the music of the Sudanese communities whose forefathers emigrated to Egypt starting from the beginning of the 19th century. Fridays, El Tanbura, an award-winning band from Port Said will perform the traditional music and songs of Port Said, including Sufi, fishermen’s and wedding songs. This band was formed in 1988 and has played an important role in reviving the music of the Canal Zone and inspiring a whole network of musicians to perform and promote this music.
